8 inch tiles | Pot Stands and Trivets | Fireplace Sets

Click thumbnails for large pictures, information and prices

This group of tiles came from a mantelpiece that is to say built in to the mantelpiece, the furniture, and not between the mantelpiece and the fire. Deeply recessed within heavy duty moulding they were well protected from environmental stresses furthermore the fireplace was in a bedroom and rarely used and so the condition is quite outstanding for such a large group of tiles.

Spare Minton hearth tiles

This was the most popular patterned tile for hearths from about 1890 - 1905. We have eight of the half-inch thick "hearth quality", all from a hearth and showing some signs of use and so ideal for spares/replacements.

Eight Inch Tiles

Most eight inch square tiles were made from around 1870 to around 1890, outside of these dates they are rarely seen. Being larger tiles they offered more scope for design, a larger 'canvas', so a greater proportion than 6" x 6" tiles are handpainted. Few were made in modern majolica, particularly with multicolour glazes, pressing was more difficult and majolica tiles were only made in large quantities post 1890.
