Japanoiserie Tiles
Japanese art had a considerable influence on English styles throughout the second half of the nineteenth century and especially the aesthetic movement prevalent in the 1870s and 1880s. Branches of blossom, decorated fans, the rising sun, flying cranes, bamboo and flowers in vases are typical japanesque elements.Japan was very isolationist until a change of government in 1868 opened up trade with the rest of the world. Imports flooded in and exports out and the previously rarely seen in the west unique nature of Japanese art inspired artists in Europe and around the world. Western artists also travelled to Japan and returned inspired and enthused.
