There were several tile decorating companies in London and of course William de Morgan & Co were there too. Most produced hand decorated tiles of pictorial and aesthetic design in smaller quantities in the late 19thC. They achieved brighter underglaze colours than were generally available at the time, especially W B Simpson and Wm de Morgan. Many of them had exclusive designs made for them by the provincial tile companies as did other London companies like bespoke decorators mechants and designers. Standard tile patterns were purchased from provincial companies too and marked with the London suppliers mark, usually stencilled on the back of the tile.
