One very tiny and a few minute rim chips, very
minor surface marks. Style: Classical picture A scene from 'The Last Tournament'. Sir
Tristram had been commissioned to bring Queen
Isolt from Ireland to marry King Mark but they
became ill fated lovers having on the journey
drunk a love potion intended for Isolt and
Mark. This is an oustanding example of one the more
popular of Moyr Smiths pictorial series. Unusual
in these colours, the olive clay body sets off
the three colour print superbly, and gives a
solemnity appropriate to the subject. The
manufacturing quality is excellent, one of the
best we have seen, the image really does carry
the quality of the engraving with great
complexity, fine lines and hardly an
imperfection. Alfred, Lord Tennyson was made Poet Laureate
by Queen Victorian in 1850 and he served for 42
years. His series 'The Idylls Of The King' are
poems about the legends of King Arthur. John
Moyr Smith produced a series of 12 tile designs
for Mintons China Works based on the poems, they
were first manufactured around 1875. Various colour variations were available as
standard having pattern numbers 1465, 1523,
1529, 1592 and 1677, the latter pattern number
1677 dates to 1879/80.
