A couple of tiny rim chips, white mark bottom
edge is a manufacturing flaw glaze miss. Little to
criticise, a bold and bright tile that displays
very nicely.
Style/technique: Victoriana
majolica An excellent bold majolica tile, embossed in
low relief. Typical late victorian bold design
as typically used for walls in places of
entertainment such as inns and theatres
especially with these strong colours. Verso clean apart from smoke stain along one
edge, unmarked ring pattern, this verso
attributed to Malkin in Blanchett. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
