'Victorian' Floral Tiles
'Victorian' is in inverted commas because many similar designs were also produced in the Edwardian era indeed most were Victorian patterns carried over but a few were new designs. Also included are tiles showing fruit as the main object in the design.Essentially they are unstylised designs with a dominant flower pattern that shows a reasonable botanical likeness. They are often framed within a border, maybe indicative of a style such as aesthetic or rococco, but in all the focus remains the flower. Many are the usual outline print, some with painted colours, but there are also handpainted, barbotine (painted in slip), majolica and tiles decorated with less often used techniques.
