A pretty arrangement of arum lilies and fronds set against a lace background and within a key pattern border.

This is tile is both common and uncommon, a quirk of victorian tile design. In it's usual itteration, without the lace backdrop, in my experience it is the commonest of all the victorian floral patterns, certainly in the top three or four. And it is a charming tile, the balanced layout and natural colours having a homely feel, many collectors will have one in their collection and many are reused for tiling. The lace background gives this version of the design an aesthetic feel, perhaps an updating of the design to account for modern fashion. It was probably made a few years after the original, in the 1890s. The pattern was also made in a majolica version.

Great manufacturing quality, the glaze has very high brilliance and shows the colours off to their best.

Usual version

Majolica

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
