A rare and outstanding tile panel, the hand painted central panel being a finely hand painted cavalier surrounded by art glaze tiles.
The cavalier covers the central 3 tiles and is surrounded by blue and green mottled art tiles and tea pot brown plain tiles. The cavalier is hand painted on Mintons blanks, it is 20 inches tall by 8 inches wide, the middle tile being 8" x 8" and the top and bottom tiles are 8" x 6". The art glaze tiles have hand made plastic clay blanks and the teapot brown tiles are Craven Dunnill. The tiles are firmly attached on portland cement the back of which is combed and has a moulded floral mark.
The cavalier is finely painted, the tiles having a matt finish. Wear can be seen on the thighs and shins and the background above the head but the fine deatail of the upper body and the head is virtually unmarked.
Keen observers may note that the panel has been trimmed at the top and extended at the bottom. This was done prior to installation, apparently one and a half inches of tiles have been removed from the top and replaced by plain brown tiles at the bottom. If required matching tiles from the other fireplace cheek (which was received in very poor condition) can be supplied to reverse the change.
