Victorian Faience Majolica Tile

  • Dimensions: 3" x 6"
  • Manufacturer: Maw & Co
  • Date: circa 1890

An architectural tile of leaves climbing and entwining around a slender carved pole. Intended to be a border tile it fulfills it's purpose excellently and with style, the design is credible and balanced in all orientations - very skillful. The superior design and moulding quality is further enhanced by a brilliant light olive green glaze.

Verso has a reverse impression of the moulded face which was done to ensure a consistent thickness of biscuit in highly embossed tiles, the consistency results in a better quality tile as required for exterior ('faience') ceramics. The makers mark, 'ACC' can be seen which is one of many identifiable marks attributable to Maw & Co.

Condition: Near Perfect
Price: £45 ($89)
Ref: 01574

Just two glaze chips on the bottom edge to the right, amazing condition for such a high relief tile.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
