A totally outstanding tile, literally as well as figuratively. A beautiful floral design moulded in very high relief, expertly moulded and with very brilliant glazes. The use of colour suggest an early 20th century tile but it must have been made by one of the very best manufacturers, it is a superb quality tile.

*The back has a moulded impression of the front done to ensure consistency in clay thickness for higher quality moulding and durability. At first we believed this tile to be by Maw & Co as they are responsible for most of the moulded back tiles we have seen, they often produced unnamed tiles with moulded pattern numbers and the quality of moulding and glazing is consistent with their excellent work. However we have noted T46 on several tiles by Henry Richards, and the pattern number ties in better datewise with them than Maws. Richards pattern numbers in the 6XXX range were first produced around 1905 - 1908 as best as we can tell, mostly moulded tiles although some we have seen in both tube line and moulded versions.

More often found is a version of this pattern by Alfred Meakin, the Meakin version is far less detailed and usually without the superb glazes of this tile. Johnsons made most of Meakin's tiles in the Edwardian era, this looks to be beyond the scope of Johnsons capabilities at the time.

There is one small chip to the centre of the flower - the white spot on the honey glaze. There are minor edge chips and very slight rubbing to a few of the high spots. There is a small dark mark in the glaze on the top left petal. None of the marks can take away from the outstanding brilliance of this tile which is very clean and the glazes have high brilliance.

In the centre is the embossed number 6346 followed by the painted number four, most likely 6346 is the pattern number and 4 the colour combination. Above 'England' at the bottom 'T46E' is embossed.

The more often found Meakin version has considerably less detail and is not quite as high relief. In this example the glazes are rather less interesting too, not as brilliant or translucent and less saturaton in the colours. Still an excellent tile.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. Customers may request a larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format for closer inspection which will be sent by email.
