A charming idyllic rural scene of a shepherd with his dog and flock relaxing in rolling countryside. Amongst the finest examples of Mintons China Works monochrome printing with fine detail and great contrast. One of a set of eight and from one of Minton & Co's earliest picture series first produced in the 1850s and echoing the works of Sadler and Green.

Note this tile and series is often firmly attributed to William Wise erroneously based upon the 'probably' assertion in Lockett. Wise was born in 1847 so unless he was the most incredible prodigy he could not have produced them. Furthermore he was not as much of an artist as is often ascribed to him, his skill was that of an engraver, taking existing artworks and transcribing them for printing on to tile. Most likely they are copies of existing artwork although engraved by an excellent hand and generally very well printed. Far better than the majority of monochrome printed works from Mintons China Works both in quality of engraving and printing and of course bear in mind that they were created for the original Minton & Co..

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
