Victorian Transfer Printed Animal Scene
Style/technique: Pictorial print Manufacturer: Steele & Wood Dimensions: 8" x 8" Date: circa 1880   From a rare factory a dramatic engraving of rutting stags in a barren landscape. The engraving is very likely after an original work by Sir Edwin Landseer who is very famous for his animal paintings most notably dogs and deer, Steele & Wood certainly produced tiles with Landseer prints on them.
Condition: Very fine Price: £160 (approx $320) Ref: 01623 Chip to top left corner is an underglaze factory fault, other damage is minute. The tile was framed or in furniture as can be seen from the nail fixing marks on the image of the back. Slight staining in the crazing which is near invisible in real life. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 560 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
