A very pleasing Arts & Crafts barbotine design which fills the tile. Natural autumn colours and a colour textured background combine to create a warm and friendly tile.

The body is of buff clay plastic clay and a little thicker than usual, verso has the Sherwin & Cotton Staffordshire Knot mark with the pattern number B107 incised. This clay appears to be proper fireclay rather than the usual clay used for early barbotine tiles, Sherwin & Cotton certainly made tiles from fireclay including tube line art nouveau.

Barbotine is a process whereby moulded tiles may be hand made, the relief being built up by painting on the designs in coloured slip. A difficult manufacturing process requiring great skill from the artist it was the first reasonably cost effective way to make durable embossed tiles. They predated moulded colour majolica tiles by a few years indeed it seems that the impetus to develop a cheaper process to compare with barbotine came from the success of Sherwin and Cotton's barbotine tiles.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
