A rare tile in the art nouveau style by Maw & Co.

We don't find so many Art Nouveau designs from Maws but this is a good one and is decorated in an unusual manner. It appears to have a printed brown outline and the other colours to have been painted through a stencil. Brushmarks are clearly visible in the leaves and plums (we had four tiles to compare) and the stippled effect in the flowerhead is clearly intended to vary from tile to tile. Another example of Maws diversity of and experimentation with production techniques that in turn produced some innovative art tiles.

Around half a dozen chips to the edges, one medium, the rest smaller, very slight surface marks. Very clean and bright.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
