One of the excellent pictorial series from Wedgwood almost certainly by Thomas Allen, "Classical Musicians in the Orange Grove', illustrating a youth entertaining a young woman by playing a lyre or cithara. A particularly fine and clear almost flawless print in a great shade of blue on a good white body.

This series and some others have been suggested to be the work of Walter Crane but in an interview with Crane for the Art Journal's 1898 Easter Art Annual he said that he had only designed tiles for Maw & Co. Some of Cranes designs taken without permission, payment or attribution from illustrated novels however appear handpainted on tiles (Mintons China Works, much vaunted for their tile making and design, were one of the most egregious culprits) and his style was much imitated. It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and in the case of imitating the style rather than copying the work it may indeed be true. Thomas Allen was indeed a skilled copyist and should this be his work he was most successful as the attributions often go to someone else.

Verso is marked Josiah Wedgwood & Sons etc.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
