A well printed the print having a good range of tones and well coloured in three good colours. The design has a fascinating visual effect, it reaches out from the tile with a three dimensional 'goldfish bowl' effect.

Probably designed by John Bradburn.

E Smith are another of those non-Stoke companies that are not widely recognised but they were an early tile maker and produced some superb wares and some innovative designs. They commenced trading as The Midland Brick and Terra Cotta Co in 1859 and made tiles quite soon afterwards, certainly from 1868. They produced pictorial series, aesthetic and floral designs of merit, the pictorial series tending to be lively and amusing, they did a super series of medieval musicians, the first design including typical period cranes we have seen is by E Smith and dates from 1868 and this design registered in April 1883.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
