Chip top left corner,
light roughness to the edges and a little wear to
the raised outline mostly around the base of the
stem. An excellent bright clean tile with high
brilliance in the glazes. Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica An excellent design
symmetrical with flowing and whiplash leaves
surrounding three flowerheads it is well
stylised yet retains good botanical quality.
Well moulded and decorated in five colours
including three for the petals and with the most
unusual feature of a moulded
background. This is a great
quuality tile which unfortunately remains
unattributed, a handful of designs with similar
versos have been noted and of the known
manufacturers Gibbons Hinton may be a
possibility. A rather simplified version of this
design and without the moulded background was
made by Alfred Meakin suggesting that this is
the original and of a fairly early date ie very
close to 1900. Verso very clean no recognisable marks. Only one available. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
