Fantastic Art Nouveau design highly stylised such that it has a good Art Deco feel to it. One could well describe the design as timeless as it would not look out of place in a Gothic environment. Wonderful colours that are nicely painted, the mottling to the background blue appearing to be intentional adds further to the richness.

We have seen this design on Corn Bros biscuit, the predecessors to Richards. Corn Bros ceased trading in 1904/5 so this design is one of the first to encapsulate some of the essence of Art Deco.

The pattern number appears slightly misleading suggesting a date more like 1907 onwards perhaps indicating the pattern may have been recreated by Richards. One thing for sure is that this is the thirteenth colour combination this pattern was decorated with indicated by the /13 in the pattern number.

The two right corners have very small chips, two light scratches and other slight surface marks. A very clean tile with high brilliance in the glazes.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
