A pleasing floral design of a
group of narcissi(?) within a circular cartouche
surrounded by a dappled blue and mustard border and with
very highly brilliant glazes. This is a very rare example of
Wedgwood's patent impressed tiles, unusual in it's design
within a circular frame and with an in my experience
unprecedented range of colours. Ten colours is an
incredible number for patent impressed or indeed almost
any tiles, there are three browns, two greens, blue and
white with painted black outline and clear and mustard
yellow glazes. The tile features a rare
combination of decorating techniques and was likely fired
several times in the process of making, the techniques
appear to have followed the following sequence. First the
three dusted browns were applied to the background, then
the blue circular slip background to create the cartouche
also apparently applied by stencil and then the black
outline to the circle painted. The blue was then pricked
through to reveal the clay beneath and the stencil
colours applied, greens, white and fawn. The tan edges to
the flower centres were painted by hand and finally the
glazes were applied with a mustard yellow glaze upon the
border and a near clear glaze on the cartouche. With a
wide range of hand decorating techniques these tiles are
quite personal to the decorator and have a very artistic
feel much beloved by collectors of arts &
crafts. One tiny glaze chip on the bottom
edge and exceedingly minor surface marks, very brilliant
glaze. One chip middle left edge and a
tiny chip just below, very small chip and tiny chip bottom
edge, tiny chip top edge. A little patch of glaze chips on
the tan background near the leftmost leaf otherwise the
surface is near perfect. The glaze has superb
brilliance. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close
to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any
chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are
usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight
as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical
eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in
reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks
