Style/technique: Aesthetic Print Manufacturer: Unattributed* Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: circa 1890   A super Arts & Crafts movement style design of sunflowers and divided into four trellis segments as popularised by Wm Morris, executed in a woodblock style print echoing the medieval origins of the design and with a wonderful intentional naivety. Bright sunflowers set against hatched backgrounds in two quadrants and flowing foliate stems with leaves and buds in the others. An absolutely charming tile, more impressive in the hand than in the image, the designer and engraver having a true feel for the subject and medium. * Almost certainly Steele & Wood. Verso very clean, unmarked.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 560 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
