Stencilled 'Marsden's Patent' Tile
Style/technique: Floral Stencil Made by: Lea of Tunstall Date: Circa 1890 Colours: 3   This great design features a big bold flower and three buds and is quite typical of late Victorian floral design often seen on transfer printed and majolica tiles but not often stencilled. Lea were probably the third largest maker of tiles by this process, after Wedgwood and Marsden's themselves. Lea's tiles tend to be bigger, bolder designs and more often used pink, a difficult colour rarely used by Wedgwood.
Condition: Excellent Price: £80 (approx $160) Ref no: 02164 The edges are excellent, one very small chip on the bottom and a few very very tiny. Only very minor surface marks, one small stun mark on the bud near the right side, very minor manufacturing imperfections, a piece of stencilling that has broken away at the base of one leaf on the left side. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
