Quite one of the most artistic tile designs ever produced by Wedgwood in any technique, an aesthetic design with a decidedly impressionist feel to it and made by very unusual techniques. The flowers' petals are coloured only by a dusting of stain and at sometimes disappear in to the background and at others stand proud.

In the making the first stencilled layer of slip applied is the background therefore making all the details of the design in reverse relief or impressed rather than embossed. Next dusting of stains in three colours, pale blue, greay and orange, has been applied to the entire tile. A stencil has then been placed over the relief part, the background, and the exposed pattern has been dusted with a dark brown stain. Then brown slip is painted in to some of the recessed parts, possibly without the use of a stencil, to define stems, part leaves and buds.

An intriguing tile, for a Patent Impressed tile I am impressed at it's unusual impressionist feel. Most irritatingly, and quite exceptionally for a Patent Impressed tile it has no pattern number on the back so we can not put it in to the sequence of designs. Veros is also most unusual fully marked Patent Impressed with place settings for feet to make a pot stand.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
