This is an absolutely fantastic tile, a nice design but absolutely superb and rare colours.

The brownish purple background glaze is quite unusual, one does see it quite often on émaux ombrants portrait tiles but it was rarely used on multicolour tiles, I do recall seeing it used a couple of times before on multicolour tiles but only on tube line patterns. It is a great colour, very translucent yet with strong colour saturation. The flowerhead is in the most wonderful deep mauve, another unusual colour and between the petals we have a nice bright pink. The light tan infill is yet again uncommon, it is only the green that can be called a typical colour. The tube line clay is coloured in quite a dark brown.

The ability to use such brilliant colours in such a combination and without manufacturing defects was limited to a just a few manufacturers like Wade, Marsden and of course Sherwin & Cotton. This truly is an excellent and rare tile.

Condition: Very fine
Price: £195 (approx $390)
Ref: 02310

Chip on the bottom left corner, one very small stun mark near the left edge and a very feint line in the glaze, two tiny stun marks near the right edge. Apart from these very minor marks close to the side edges caused by the fitting in a fireplace frame the tile looks like new.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
