An excellent tube line tile in wonderful colours including purple, pale blue and a slate green background.

This tube line design tile in an art deco style is difficult to date for sure. There were regular and geometric designs made right from the early years of the art nouveau period around 1900 by Corn Bros, this art deco design could well be viewed as art nouveau by some and maybe then it was considered so. The pattern number suggests before the 1920s.

Wade is a highly collectable company for their advertising and other pottery and whimsies, small cute figures which they started making in 1953. Few Wade collectors are aware that the company were making art tiles with super designs and in amazing colours around the turn of the century. So excellent are their tiles that I rate them in the top three art nouveau majolica tile makers easily besting better known names like Pilkington and Minton. Wade tiles used the brand name 'Flaxman', few are named however as with many manufacturers their back grids are have distinct but subtle identifiable details.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 220 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
