Victorian Moulded Majolica Landscape Tile

A brilliant architectural landscape tile, perhaps the best translucent green glaze I have ever seen on a Corn Brothers tile it looks much more like one of Sherwin & Cotton's excellent glazes. The scene is of Cockington, a tiny hamlet of ancient thatched cottages and buildings near Torquay in Devon with an ancient forge on the left. Torquay was a popular tourist destination in Victorian times and still is today, the hamlet is preserved just as it was over 100 years ago as can be seen by following the links below which illustrate recent views of the same scene.

Previously we have had one of these with a completely plain back apparently intended as giftware - museum shops have been around for a long time!

The two top corners were cropped for the original installation in furniture, no chips or damage of any kind to the edges, the lighter areas are glaze misses. There is some light - medium scuffing and short scratches to high points some just about visible when the tile is viewed normally and you seek them out. A very clean tile with outstanding brilliance in the glaze.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
