Aesthetic Japoniserie Floral/Bird Life Tile
Style/technique: Aesthetic print Manufacturer: Minton Hollins Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: design registered 1883   A pretty Victorian aesthetic bird tile. A pair of birds chasing butterflies amongst blossoming branches framed within an aesthetic border. Very competently made as usual for Minton Hollins from the excellent quality engraving to the strong ivory body, excellent printing and excellent glazing. Artist's mongram JB at the base of the circle, most unusual to see a Minton Hollins tile with artist's mark, probably John Windsor Bradburn. I think it's great, I've had one in my collection for years and I mainly collect art nouveau - I like butterflies too. Verso marked as usual, has a little mortar residue but within the grid, indistinct design registration mark.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
