Émaux Ombrants Portrait Tile

  • Style/technique: Émaux ombrants portrait
  • Manufacturer: Sherwin & Cotton
  • Dimensions: 6" x 9"
  • Date: Designed in 1898

As befitting the age of empire the first émaux ombrants portrait George Cartlidge did was Queen Victoria, this was the second, the Prime Minister William Gladstone. Rather confusing to us nowadays is that Gladstone is not named, the front of the tile bears the name of the artist's work that he copied, H S Mendelssohn. Everyone recognised Gladstone's image in 1898.

Excellent manufacturing, no off putting pooling of the glaze, no crazing to detract, a super tile.

Condition: Very fine
Price: £230 (approx $460)
Ref: 02378

There's a very small scratch in the glaze an inch up from the bottom right corner, a couple of very sort light scratches on his hair and other extremely light surface marks. No chips, the few tiny indentations around the edges are flaws in the clay.

UK Special Delivery £238

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Minor surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
