Victorian Aesthetic Tile

  • Style/technique: Aesthetic print
  • Manufacturer: Unattributed
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: circa 1885

A nice quality aesthetic floral tile with an interesting well stylised floral based design. Nice crisp print on a drab clay body, has the feel of a Mintons China Works tile and has a plain grid verso.

* A kind reader has contacted us to advise that she has an example of the pattern with the mark of Henry Barralet verso. Barralet was a London reseller, likely a hardware merchant, who applied a stencil mark to (some) tiles that he sold most being by Malkin. It is considered unlikely that this is a Malkin pattern.

Condition: Excellent

Price: £55 (approx $107)

Ref: 02464

Three tiny edge chips otherwise virtually unmarked. A clean and bright tile.

Condition: Good

Price: £28 (approx $50)

Ref: 02464B

Excellent condition apart from the large chip top right which doesn't interfere with the pattern, one surface chip bottom left and other very minor marks. A clean and bright tile.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be easily spotted. Minor surface marks described are not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For details of how marks are described see Condition.
