Magnificent design of a diving swallow set
against a climbing wild rose both bursting from
a stylised aesthetic border with hatching and
stylised flowerhead corner blocks all executed
in the arts and crafts movement style of a
medieval woodblock print.
A very full and complex work of art executed
with a great degree of skill. A seriously
excellent tile combining two very difficult and
on the surface irreconcilable aims, naturalism
and style, this would be in my personal
collection except that I have one already.
A fabulous design, equal to those of major
named designers (dare I say it better than
many), Craven Dunnill were an excellent company
though not as prolific as Maw & Co situated
just a few hundred yards away they deserve the
title of artistic tile makers for the range and
quality of their decorative wares.
Verso very clean, embossed craven Dunnill etc
and printed pattern number.
