Magnificent design of a diving swallow set against a climbing wild rose both bursting from a stylised aesthetic border with hatching and stylised flowerhead corner blocks all executed in the arts and crafts movement style of a medieval woodblock print.

A very full and complex work of art executed with a great degree of skill. A seriously excellent tile combining two very difficult and on the surface irreconcilable aims, naturalism and style, this would be in my personal collection except that I have one already.

A fabulous design, equal to those of major named designers (dare I say it better than many), Craven Dunnill were an excellent company though not as prolific as Maw & Co situated just a few hundred yards away they deserve the title of artistic tile makers for the range and quality of their decorative wares.

See 02840 for a similar tile from the same series.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
