An outstanding example of this popular series, a boy and girl walking through a snow-covered winter's landscape. A clear and very finely detailed print in black on white.

We had noted quite some while ago that there are different engravings used for the series, the coloured examples have less shading and hatching than single colour examples but the amazing clarity of this group has surprised us so we looked at some others. What is clear is that there are two different sets of engravings for the single colour prints, it seems that the black prints are sharper with more detail than the other colours. It is understandable that the blue may be less sharp as the colour tends to migrate in to the glaze and blur a little but the brown seem less sharp too so it appears that three sets were done, sharpest for black, less sharp for other colours, less shading and hatching for hand colouring. However maybe it was that they wore out the master engravings and another set were done, certainly the original artwork has more detail than any of the tile prints. The greater detail runs throughout the tile, the faces are better, the foliage more detailed but the easiest comparison is the bark patterns on trees. These are really superb examples and recommended even to collectors who heretofore have collected just blue and white.

One very small chip mid point on the left edge, a few other very tiny edge chips, there's a little rubbing on the very close to the left and top edges where the glaze has pooled (not the lighter strips which are common imperfections in these tiles) otherwise surface condition is near perfect.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 560 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
