Aesthetic Transfer Printed Tile
Style/technique: Aesthetic Print Manufacturer: T & R Boote* Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: Circa 1885   A unique and fascinating design featuring heraldic symbols alternating with gothic abstracts in chocolate brown on off-white. The designs feature in John Leighton's design book Suggestions in Design first published in 1852 and in an expanded edition in 1881, other tile patterns have been noted as originating from the book. The heraldic Dolphin symbolises swiftness, diligence, salvation charity and love and the Lion Rampant Regardant symbolises deathless courage and are both presented in highly stylised form. Interesting to note that the hatching is different on all four quadrants, the figure of the lion, the maltese cross, the squares to the other quarter's corners and the backgorund of the dolphin. Quite an exercise in design. *Verso is typical Boote ring back but they did sell biscuit to other tile decorators.
Condition: Fair Price: £55 (approx $110) Ref: 02571 Small chip near the bottom of the right edge, very small slice top left corner, minute chip bottom edge. Hairline start point just below mid left edge about three inches on the front of the tile and one inch on the back which demotes this to fair condition otherwise it would be classed as excellent. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
