Tiny chip top edge, two minute corner chips,
very minor surface marks. Outstanding
brilliance. Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica A set of ten of excellent colour match suitable
for fireplaces, furniture or wall fixing are
available. A superb organic art nouveau tulip tile the
wonderful moulding giving a naturalistic feel
even though the design is highly sylised. Super
bold deep pink, almost cerise, flowerheads and
luscious greens, it looks great in the image but
has so much more in real life, the glazes have
such brilliance that it is almost surprising
they don't glow in the dark. The pink deserves a
special mention for it is a rare and beautiful
colour and was very difficult to work with and
even with these tiles there can be seen some
errant mixing where it meets the background
green. This kind of organic moulding was done right
at the start of what one could call the modern
majolica tile era in the 1880s but the glazes
then were too viscous and reactive to produce
clear designs. That heralded Marsden's own
patent stencilling and the raised outline
approach epitomised by Pilkingtons efforts in
the 1890s with 'cloisonné' moulded
outlines up to 2mm high to contain the
glazes. Most companies used rather more subtle
outlines and a handful of designs were well
executed with bolder outlines incorporated into
the design rather than being just colour
separators. This subset of Marsden's tiles stand
out, the bas relief combined with highly
translucent glazes retained by subtle outlines
produces a superb 'best of both worlds'
effect. Marsden was a technologist who appreciated
the qualities of design, or vice versa, he
worked with both to a greater extent than anyone
of the time perhaps with the exception of George
Cartlidge. Few Marsden tiles have the company
initials or logo and so for the most part are
unattributed or incorrectly attributed but most
collectors of the best art nouveau tiles will
have some, often unrecognised, in their
collections. Versos very clean, typical Marsden grip
pattern, rubber stamped pattern number. One tiny, one very tiny rim chips, slight
bruise. Two tiny, one very tiny rim chips, minute
surface chip, tiny piece of kiln dirty near the
centre. Minute corner chip, white mark right edge is a
glaze miss, surface very near perfect
