A superb moulded tile in black clay featuring a mythical beast part horse and part dragon. A very rare series usually found moulded in buff clay and with opaque majolica glazes this is exceptional being in black clay with just the background glazed creating a wonderful etheral effect. Rare by virtue of its date, design and decoration the rarity further increased by the perfect condition of this tile, this tile has never been installed and judging from the wax residue that we removed has been framed all of its life.

Verso embossed Minton & Co. About 3/8 inch undersize, presumably the black clay shrank more than the usual buff, nevertheless it is still considerably heavier than standard tiles.

Perhaps ten very tiny > minute glazing imperfections, the little specks on the background. No marks on the relief. Mint condition apart from the tiny manufacturing flaws, totally exceptional.
