A beautiful tile illustrating an egret fishing by a lakeside, sensitively painted in a semi-transparent white enamel on a celadon glazed clay body creating a most ethereal effect. The enamel being semi-transparent is applied more thickly where solidity of colour is required so it is slightly three dimensional somewhat alike pâte sur pâte and impasto techniques. A rare and fine work of art showing great skill. |

Chip bottom right corner, one small, one tiny, one minute chips on the bottom, one tiny chip mid right side. Top corners chipped in the tile works before glazing as two other small edge marks. Very smooth wear on the top left corner as if it was carefully filed for a frame at some time. Surface is near perfect, no wear to the enamel, minute bubble blows where the white is thickest and a few extremely light marks on the background glaze. |

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition. |
