A fabulously bright and colourful Japanoiserie influenced full aesthetic design with an array, almost confusion of elements. Natural forms of flowers, highly stylised flowerhead roundels, complex hatched background and many different borders. However what stands out is the brilliance of the colours and glaze, six underglaze painted colours including mauve and pink which surely indicate a very late 19thC date, the tile in both design and colouring is a feast for the eye.

Meir are not well known for making tiles but 'J M & S' is printed verso, John Meir & Son went out of business in 1897. Many smaller potteries tried their hand at tile making by decorating bought in biscuit, some distributed tiles made by larger concerns, sometimes having exclusive patterns made.

Of interest to collectors and researchers may be that we have the subsequent pattern number here, quite a different pattern but still characteristic of the period.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
