Unusual Original Majolica Tile

  • Style/technique: Original majolica
  • Manufacturer: Maw & Co
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: circa 1880

An excellent majolica tile with a stylised natural form perhaps a pine cone or flower. Excellent range of colours and a most unusual characteristic. The majority of glazes used are the usual opaque glazes used to show the colour without the clay colour showing through as used before white clays were widely available and stable however the rockingham brown is a translucent lead glaze as can be seen by the moulded relief showing differences in colur intensity according to it's depth. It is most unusual to see opaque and translucent glazes used on a single tile.

Verso spotlessly clean with usual Broseley factory markings indicating a pre 1885 date.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
