Rare Riverside Architecture Minton Tile
Style/technique: Pictorial print Manufacturer: Mintons China Works Pattern number: 2475* Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: circa 1895   A scene of a riverside tower with a waterfall, perhaps part of a ruined abbey or chapel, from a series of landscapes introduced around 1890 (not from the earlier and more often found known Wise and Swetman Views and tourist locations series). 'Riverside Architecture' is perhaps the last landscape series that Mintons China Works produced, the theme apparently is of rivers with man-made structures nearby and includes bridges, mills etc. I can recall seeing maybe eight or ten so presumably a series of twelve but they don't come along very often. A nice shade of blue on white and a good series for the fisherman to collect! *Pattern number believed to be correct but more confirmation is required. It would date the series introduction to early 1891 which is certainly about right. Pattern number 2469 is also of riverside architecture but in 6 x 12 and 12 x 6 format. Verso very clean with Mintons' usual branding.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
