Three very tiny edge chips, the most minimal
surface marks, no crazing, extremely clean and
bright. Style: Japonesque aesthetic A super aesthetic design of vignettes with
flowers and a crane and other little flowerheads
floating against a key pattern hatched
background. A distinctive design of its period
and in a nice shade of blue. On occassion cited as perhaps a Christopher
Dresser design but rather more in the
Anglo-Japanese style of the noted architect
Thomas Jeckyll who designed ironwork and likely
tiles for Barnard, Bishop & Barnard. Mintons
Ltd made tiles for BBB including one of a
similar style, it is most likely that Mintons
continued with their usual practice and their
internal designers based the pattern on one they
had seen. The background hatching on this tile
is almost identical to that on some fireplaces
by BBB. There are no wall tile designs known to
have been designed to Christopher Dresser that I
am aware of despite many such alleged
attributions and it is most unlikely that he
designed any tiles for a variety of reasons, in
his own book designs for many media and
materials are shown but none for tiles. Dresser as with all noted designers whose
work was illustrated and published in the media
was much imitated, there is no doubt that
Mintons Ltd amongst many others would have
plagarised and possibly copied Dresser designs
for other materials and applied them to tiles.
After years of trying even the noted Dresser
expert Harry Lyons was unable to find any
designs for his book that he could cite designed
by Dresser instead he uses the phrases "in the
style of Dresser" and "all typical Dresser
motifs". Lyons by his own admission is confused
about the chronology of the Minton companies and
unfortunately shows Mintons Ltd marks for
pottery alongside tiles to which they do not
apply thus continuing and expanding upon the
confusion. In the Mintons China Works catalogue four of
these tiles are shown in a group in different
orientations. Versos clean a little smoke stain embossed
Mintons etc. Very tiny chip bottom left corner, a few very
tiny/minute edge and surface marks, no crazing,
extremely clean and bright. Slight wear to the tip of the rim one very tiny
rim chip other very slight marks. Slight wear to the tip of the rim mostly left
edge other very slight marks.
