Minton Blue and White William Wise Country Pursuits Tile
Style/technique: Pictorial print Manufacturer: Mintons China Works Pattern number: 2159E Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: circa 1890   A tile from what I think to be the best series of Wise's work, Country Pursuits. This series depicts ladies of leisure in the countryside and followed around five years after the Village Life series which illustrates country folks' day to day working activities. These two series were both designed and engraved by Wise whereas other series were only engraved by him following existing designs. Much less often found than Village Life as the popularity of pictorial tiles waned from the late 1880s onwards this is a rare treat for collectors. Verso very clean with Mintons name and badge and printed E denoting its series suffix.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
