Rare Fine Handpainted Figural Tile
Style/technique: Figural handpainted Dimensions: 7" x 7" Date: circa 1875   A super handpainted figural tile of domstic duties, a woman standing on tip toe to hang a night shirt on the washing line, overglaze enamel painted on Mintons China Works biscuit. Seven inch tiles are rare and mostly date from the 1870s, an odd size to be sure, why they were made is uncertain, maybe an incremental increase from 6 x 6 as technology improved. This verso is really unusual too, a standard Mintons China Works grid, unnamed as they used for supply to distributors, however the engineer clearly started to apply the name Mintons to the die as there is an 'M', indistinct because it has ben subsequently filled in, but not other marks. A very nice tile and with novelty value for the discerning collector too.

Note the larger corner chip apparent on the verso image is a manufacturing imperfection and does not affect the face of the tile, the smaller corner chip also does not affect the face of the tile and is shallower than it appears. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 500 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
