Fabulously richly coloured with brilliant purple and gilt outlining and veining of the leaves this was a complex tile to make.

Slater's patent was a technique for creating a random texture to the tile surface. A piece of lace was put in to the press before the clay dust, when the clay was pressed it would have the lace embedded in it's surface. Upon firing the lace would burn away and when removed from the kiln the loose clay would be dusted off revealing the pattern of the lace etched in the tile surface. The tile was then decorated with stencilled slips and fired again, the purple is most unusual for slip colour of the date and so may well be overpainted requiring another firing. Then glazed with a thin semi-matt glaze and fired and then gilded and fired - this tile may have been fired five times during the manufacturing process.

Some light wear to the tips of the edges barely a millimetre on to the face of the tile at most, a number of tiny chips to the textured ground mostly towards the left edge. No significant marks, the gilt is mostly intact and has retained its brightness.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
