Very Rare Wiltshaw & Robinson (Carltonware) Tile

  • Style/technique: Floral aesthetic print
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: design registered 1890

A most rare and interesting tile, printed twice and majolica glazed with a pale green translucent glaze. A highly stylised flower and buds perhaps between carnations and honeysuckle framed by borders and corner motifs of fans.

Wiltshaw & Robinson tiles are very rarely found, I have only seen one other for sale, seen another and heard of another two via Harvey Pettit who wasn't able to furnish any pictures. In addition this is a rare patent process, so rare that it is the only example that I have seen. The tile is marked 'Patent' verso, the patent appears to refer to a second print in the form of a mesh overlying the first floral print. Also on the clean verso is the W & R swallow stamp, on one edge is a registration number for 1890.

Printed mark

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
