Godwin Floral Majolica Tile
Style/technique: Floral majolica Manufacturer: Godwin & Hewitt Pattern number: 2644 Dimensions: 6" x 6" Date: design registered 1897   A super quality tile for design and manufacture, exquisitely modelled in a stylised floral design and richly glazed. The design has the origins of floral designs from a decade or more earlier with the texture achieved by printing and colouring replaced by the subtlty in the moulding Verso is quite clean, has embossed registration number and England, pattern number and (presumably) glaze colour 251 written in pencil. Also written in pencil is the sum 5/- (five shillings) which appears to be contemporaneous and would have been the price of a dozen, then over half a week's wage for the average worker.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
