A very rare tile finely decorated in the
aesthetic taste with bold stylised flowerheads
in two quadrants, foliage and blossoms in the
other two.
This is a top quality floor quality tile made
in extremely durable semi-vitrified red clay,
very dense and hence heavy and it is rare to
find them decorated. Even rarer is the white
print which of course could only feasibly be
applied to darker coloured clays. The clay being
semi-vitrified was also less inclined to accept
printed decoration indeed when I first saw it I
expected the print to be enamelled overglaze but
it is in fact underglaze.
Verso very clean, Boote rings etc and pattern
number 44 printed. The decorating may have been
by a company other than Boote, Boote sold
undecorated bicuit and this would have been a
standard floor tile and hence widely
available.
