Condition Report

Glazed over manufactring flaw chip top right corner, one very tiny edge chip, near perfect surface condition with high brilliance glaze.

 

One of a series of twelve landscapes engraved by L T Swetman in1886 and the series introduced the following year. Few of these scenes are identified and tiles from the series do not come along very often. This appears to be the backwaters of a continental seaside town or city. An interesting mix of decorating techniques being both lithoprinted and block printed, lithoprint for the fine detailed scene and block printing for the solid colours in the borders.

Verso slight stain and a few grains of adhesive residue, embossed name etc.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
