Very tiny chip bottom edge, two minute chips
left edge, surface is very near perfect, perfectly
clean. Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica A good, bold art nouveau design with
characteristic whiplash lines and highly
stylised floral pattern the leaves emanating
from the head in a hydra like fashion. Not a
design seen very often and then usually in green
this in a clear almost colourless glaze is rare.
Probably not so rare in its day as such bright
designs would have been mostly used for walls
where they would reflect light well. Of course
wall tiles tend to disappear with the buildings
they were installed in rather than in washstands
and fireplaces from whence come most antique
glazed tiles. Verso very clean, one of Gibbons Hinton's bar
variations, embossed pattern number. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
