This is a rare tile, a Wedgwood stencilled
slip tile on a patent impressed body, the
impressing of a lace pattern creating similar
effect to Doulton & Slater's patent. A good
range of colours in the slips, blue and yellow,
green and brown, all covered with a brilliant
apple green glaze.
Whilst it is almost universally believed that
Marsden's Patent refers to the slip decoration
this is not the case, impressed means literally
impressed as this lace pattern is. Doulton &
Slater's patent refers to plastic clay and
presumably applied by hand or roller, Marsden's
Patent refers to use in a press.
Typical unnamed Wedgwood verso with painted
pattern number. It is considered most likely
that this was actually made by Marsden and Co as
Wedgwood apparently subcontracted much of their
tile production.
