This is quite a well known design more for
the copies produced by Johnson's and others than
the original by the most prolific tile designers
of the period The Henry Richards Tile Co. And
what an excellent design, it has formality, it
has fluidity, it fills the tile without being
overbearing, it is charateristic of the genre
but far from ordinary. Almost invariably found
in one colour this single tile is the only
multicolour example of the design I have seen
for a couple of decades. The pattern number (not
shown on this tile) indicates an introduction
date of 1903.
This is a design classic, and a rare example
of such.
Verso typical diagonal bars, no other
markings, very clean but sparse grains of
plaster remain.
