One of this excellent series designed by John Moyr Smith for Mintons, a series which is not as often found as I would expect given the universal appeal of fairy tales. First introduced in 1874 they remain in Minton's catalogue certainly well in to the 1890s, most would have been produced earlier in the date range as over time the popularity of printed tiles especially in single colour faded.

Blue and white is of course most appropriate for this tile entitled Blue Beard and apparently blue and white for this series would seem to be rare. I looked the series up in the book about Moyr Smith by Annamarie Stapleton and therein it is shown only in brown and black prints. So rare it may be in blue and white although looking back at our records we have had one previously so not unheard of.

Verso very clean, Minton name, badge etc.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. Customers may request a larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format for closer inspection which will be sent by email.
