This was a wall tile and being high relief there
are a few tiny surface chips most notably on the
ring in the middle. No surface scratches or wear of
any note the tile displays very well the high
relief and brilliant glaze catching the light.
Style/technique: Gothic
majolica An excellent design of a complex gothic style
embossed in high relief and with a super
translucent onyx green glaze. Quite a rare genre
of tiles, gothic style in lead glaze majolica,
this design also seen with Doulton branding
verso and possibly made for them by Marsden. Verso perfectly clean, unmnamed, subtle
disctinctive marks. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
